Derry Shadow Youth Council [NI]

Target Group: Derry Shadow Youth Council consists of 39 members ranging in age from 16 to 22 representing the various youth, community, education, geographical, political interests and the wider community.

Age Group: 16 to 22

Children and Young People Involvement:

Derry City Shadow Council is a group of young people who have been elected by their peers to represent the voice and the opinions of young people in the Derry City Council area. The Shadow Council exists to bridge the gap between young people and Derry City Council. Shadow Councillors base their work on issues that young people bring to them. The project enables young people to become involved in democratic decision-making and enables young people to proactively contribute to the shaping of policy and decisions that affect them. Derry City Shadow Council is seen as a stepping-stone for young people and it is hoped that many of the Shadow Councillors will progress on to become the future leaders in the Derry City Council area and when their two years on Council is over they will remain active in their own community.

Aim:

  • To develop capacity for participation in the democratic decision making process;
  • Provide a forum for young people to raise matters that concern them;
  • Enable young people to proactively contribute to the shaping of policy and decisions that affect them;
  • To promote positive community relations through active citizenship, personal development and learning;
  • Work in partnership with Derry City Council and act as the youth voice in Council;
