Measuring the Magic? Evaluating and researching young people’s participation in public decision-making.[E/NI/S/W]

Written by P.Kirby with S. Bryson

This report reviews evaluation and other research evidence about young people’s participation in public decision making, with the aim of identifying how much we know about what works and what more we need to find out. The report draws mainly on 27 research studies, which are summarised at the end of the report, but contains many references to other relevant research. None of the studies included in the review focus on the participation of children and young people who are the users of social care services. Despite this there is much helpful information on different methods of participation, about the barriers to effective participation and solutions to these, and about the gaps in research evidence, particularly in relation to evidence about the impact of children’s participation on outcomes.
