Parents & Paediatricians Together Project – Contact a Family [NI]

Age Group : All parents and carers of children & young people with a disability, special need, rare disorder, acute or chronic illness.
Specific Interest Group: BME this year but all really.

How are the Children and Young People involved?
INDIRECT INVOLVEMENT - The aim of the project is to open up new opportunities for parents & carers of children & young people with a disability to have a say in shaping or developing their local regional child health services. There have been several opportunities where the children and young people have been invited to take part alongside their parents and we promote the importance of C & YP being involved and having their say as individuals and as a group in their own right.

Parent Participation Guide

What did or what has the project/initiative achieved in terms of positive change for the organisation or/and the children and young people?
We have raised the profile of the organisation considerably over the past 2 yrs and have increased the number of health professionals coming to us for advice and support for parents and carers. The opportunities of participation have been ad hoc and it has been hard to get parents to come along and participate. Our regional survey suggests apathy and being disillusioned with the present process of over consultation but no value being placed on their opinions.

Any further /additional information on your project/initiative?
It is a 3 yr project 2004- 2007 and is in the last 6 months of running. No plans to extend it beyond this time in its present format.
