How are the Children and Young People involved?
Children are invited to take part in interactive workshops and encouraged to question attitudes to disabilities through our Kids on the Block project. Young people with and without disabilities engage in non-competitive sessions not only to increase their level of exercise but simultaneously developing their self-esteem and meeting like-minded people. This happens on our Young, Fit and Active project. Further our Sports Development work involves children and young people promoting inclusive participation across a range of sporting activities. Through our Youth Outreach Programme young people are involved in influencing both youth work practice and policy through active consultation with our organisation and our representatives. Within the Peer Education Project young people gain the skills and knowledge to become effective educators for inclusion within their peer group. All the young people are involved in Child Protection and Disability Awareness Training. The young people become confident in breaking down misconceptions which affect young people with disabilities.
The young people with and without disabilities throughout Phab NI Inclusion Matters projects are involved in selecting, planning, delivering and evaluating sports, education projects and raising disability awareness which centre on social inclusion.

What did or what has the project/initiative achieved in terms of positive change for the organisation or/and the children and young people?
Children with and without disabilities have been given an opportunity to question the barriers for those with disabilities around them allowing them to develop their own opinions and alleviating any misconceptions. Our Sports Development and Young, Fit and Active programmes have welcomed young people who were previously excluded and provided the opportunity for them to take part in so called ‘normal’ activities. Young people with and without disabilities have been equipped with the skills and knowledge to help them stand up to discrimination and social exclusion. They have developed the confidence to tackle misinformed peer attitudes towards disability through a sensitive manner.
Any further /additional information on your project/initiative?
We continue to enable children and young people with and without disabilities to break down the barriers which exist for people with disabilities. Our ‘Children embracing Diversity’ Programme tackles rural issues of EDI and empowers rural communities to solve rural issues.
