Preparation for Participation : Lisburn YMCA [NI]

Age Group: 15 -25
Specific Interest Group: All young people

Description:
The Preparation for Participation programme (PFP) is an accredited training course that is specifically designed to equip young people with the skills they need to take control of their own projects.

Many consider “participation"to be about consultation and young people becoming involved in councils or forums. While this has undoubted value we believe that more young people can benefit from training that has both hard and soft outcomes.  This course gives participants practical training and challenges them to demonstrate their new skills in practice. It will develop young people as project planners within their own groups.

How are the Children and Young People involved?
We offer level 1 & 2 OCN course that can be delivered to suit the groups needs and abilities. As part of the course participants will be asked to plan and implement their own project using skills accquired. The theory is that we are training young people to take more control and giving them an experience of organising things for themselves. Time commitment is variable although the training element can be up to 30 hours. The training is designed to meet all learning styles and is flexible in the methods of demonstrating evidence of learning.

What did or what has the project/initiative achieved in terms of positive change for the organisation or/and the children and young people? The training was developed in response to identified skills gaps that young people need in order to improve their ability to become more involved in designing and implementing their own projects. The group who have undertaken the training have demonstrated greater abilty, skills and confidence in themselves. These skills obviously transfer into other areas of their lives.

Additional Information: The course has been specifically designed by experienced trainers and youth workers to enable young people to have more confidence and skills in determining and running their own projects within youth organisations. It is a practical, experiential training that we believe helps those taking part become more capable of meaningful, effective participation in their organisations.

Training can be delivered to suit the needs of the group both in terms of venue and timing.
