How are Children and Young People Involved?
At present we have a piece called Bath Time out on the road which explores issues of pollution, consequences of our actions/choices and helping others.
We are also just finishing a project called Express Yourself which has been working with young people in TSN areas who are in danger of being excluded from school.
This has involved 3 year long residencies for the last three years and has used the arts to improve aspects of behaviour, empathy, group work etc.
We also have a strand of our work called Theatre Squad which provides stand alone interactive workshops which explore issues relevant to today’s youth e.g. bullying, racism, anger management, relationships, refugees and displacement.
We try to involve children and young people in the early stages of development for projects e.g. with our last secondary project His n Hers we work shopped with a group of teenage boys and girls to get an accurate feel for their culture and thinking on the issues we were exploring. The writers then used what they had gleaned in their scripts to accurately reflect the lives of young people today in NI.
We tend to have an audience of young people in at a dress rehearsal also to give feedback on the production before it goes out on tour. Generally we also ask for feedback through our website and in the form of reviews from the young people.
Within the next couple of years we hope to pull together a youth board for our company to also inform our work and what we do.
