Taking the Initiative: promoting young people’s involvement in public decision making in the UK – Update [E/NI/S/W]
Written by David Cutler
In June 2001 the Carnegie Young People Initiative (CYPI) launched Taking the Initiative – promoting the involvement of young people in public decision making in the UK.
The report looks at the involvement of young people aged 10-25 in public decision making. This is the age range usually covered by youth services.
The report describes activity since late 2000 to encourage the involvement of young people. It looks at four sectors, national government policies and structures, local government, education (mainly formal education in secondary schools) and health. Work in each of the four nations of the UK is described in turn in these chapters. Towards the end of each chapter is an analysis of progress made on the recommendations in our UK report. The report concludes with an agenda to move beyond policy commitment to sustained, practical action.
