Specific Interest Group: Young people from across Northern Ireland, particularly those from vulnerable or marginalised communities.
Wheelworks Mission:
To support children and young people’s social and cultural development through accessible and innovative community-based programmes, which provide a creative fusion of traditional and digital art forms.
Wheelworks Vision:
A fully inclusive society where children and young people can develop and sustain their creative potential through active participation in the arts.
How are Children and Young People Involved?:
Young people meet with the WheelWorks artist(s) to discuss and agree their aims and objectives at the start of their project. Participants are then guided through all stages of the artistic process by the artist. Young people have ownership over the content and final output of their art projects, deciding at the outset how they would like to use the film/ CDROM/ CD they produce, eg: as a training/ information resource for their community or to influence policy makers about issues important to them. All participants complete project evaluation forms, and any recommendations/ suggestions are then incorporated into future WheelWorks programmes. We have recently submitted an application which, if successful, would see the establishment of a young person’s advisory group to oversee a 5 year programme involving the production of training materials by young people.
Current Work:
Recent/ current WheelWorks programmes include ‘Respect’, a photography & creative writing project with young people from 6 diverse communities across Belfast, focusing on the theme of Respect, and Multiple Realities, a digital arts programme working with young people from cultural and ethnic minority communities throughout Northern Ireland on projects exploring identity and raising issues relating to diversity and social exclusion.
